Silicon photonics focuses on integrating complex optical functionality into a chip using existing CMOS microelectronic fabrication processes, and thereby leveraging those processes for high-volume production of low-cost, small-form-factor devices. Such devices—silicon photonic integrated circuits (PICs)—consist of planar arrangements of basic optical building blocks, interconnected by optical waveguides on a substrate.
