Editor’s note: One year ago, the 2016 edition of the Integrated Photonic Systems Roadmap International (IPSR-I) was released to the public. In this article, three contributors to this substantial effort share some of the motivations for the roadmap, provide a look at the methods behind creating it, and offer a glimpse of what’s ahead.
