In the spring of 1979, the management board of an electronics company gathered in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, to evaluate the prototype of a new kind of sound recording unlike the mechanical groove-etching system of Thomas A. Edison or the analog magnetic recording developed in the early 20th century.
