March 20, 2014—At the Optical Fiber Conference in San Francisco, Calif., U.S.A., interconnect supplier Mellanox Technologies (Sunnyvale, Calif.) and developer Ranovus (Ottawa, Canada and San Jose, Calif.) have announced the founding of an industry consortium to standardize wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) specifications for 2-km-reach 100G large cloud data center interconnects. The multi-source agreement, called OpenOptics, unites 1550 nm band WDM lasers and quad (four-channel) small-form-factor pluggable (QSFP) specifications for single-mode fiber data center network infrastructure.

Saeid Aramideh, chief marketing and sales officer for Ranovus, says, “We believe application of a multi-channel laser source, coupled with silicon photonics to enable connectivity in the 1550 nm band in the QSFP form-factor is a game changer in reducing the data-center fiber plant connectivity cost by four to seven times that of  legacy multimode fiber implementations.”

The OpenOptics MSA will add additional members to enable a multi-source, horizontal supply chain. According to the companies, the OpenOptics MSA specifications will enable cloud data centers to install 100G infrastructure upgrades as seamlessly as they do in server, storage and network applications.
