In 1990 Josef Bille, Andreas Dreher and Gerhard Zinser contributed a prescient chapter on scanning laser tomography of the living human eye to Noninvasive Diagnostic Techniques in Ophthalmology. Their prototype laser tomographic scanner used an active mirror and a Hartmann-Shack wavefront sensor to compensate for optical aberrations of the eye and to improve depth resolution of the optic nerve head.
Thirty years later, Bille has edited an open-access, contributed book that is a memorial to the works of the late Gerhard Zinser, the co-founder of Heidelberg Engineering (HE). The contributors are colleagues at HE and clinicians that validated the succession of their diagnostic instruments. In the three decades between both books, the outstanding progress of diagnostic instruments built on the seminal foundations of confocal microscopy, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and adaptive optics (AO) for the anterior and the posterior parts of the eye is evident, and serves to honor the work of Zinser at his company.
The comprehensive discussions of the commercial instruments are limited to HE products. The chapters are augmented with full-color figures, key references and an index.
