Birefringent Thin Films and Polarizing Elements, 2nd ed.

Developments in nano-optical technologies are creating new requirements for thin-layer birefringent elements. Recent advances in the understanding of the physical basis of birefringence are allowing us to meet these new requirements.

This volume provides a comprehensive description of the underlying principles and applications of thin-film birefringence. The first part of the book presents the mathematical framework for the description of birefringence, emphasizing computational techniques and appropriate computer codes. The editors pay special attention to the fabrication and characterization of birefringent thin-films. Applications are covered in the third section. The book also includes an appendix, which is described as a sampler of anisotropic thin-film coating designs.

In summary, all thin-film birefringent information is here. The book is generously illustrated and well-produced, and thus is highly readable. The intended audience includes researchers and graduate students in optics. Readers will find everything they need to develop their interest in this area.
