Optics on the Brain: OSA’s Mulitphoton and Patterned Optogenetics Incubator

A December 2013 OSA incubator meeting highlighted the role of cutting-edge optics and photonics in solving the mysteries of neuroscience—and helped forge connections between researchers in the two communities.

Unlocking the brain’s inner mysteries promises not only to reveal who we are and why we act as we do, but also to help us treat a wide array of neurological and psychiatric disorders that affect hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet, despite the increasing pace of neuroscience research in the last few decades, several seemingly impenetrable technological hurdles still prevent neuroscientists from making the key discoveries needed to treat or cure diseases.
