The integrated circuit changed electronics dramatically. Could the integration of photonic circuits that demonstrate quantum behavior have similar effects on quantum computing? Researchers at the University of Bristol (U.K.) recently built hundreds of photonic circuits on a single silicon wafer and demonstrated quantum phenomena with them (Science 320, 646). Using integrated directional couplers, they showed that arbitrary photonic quantum circuits could be made with good stability and scalability.
