“Many important advancements have been made in grating technology since 1978, when K.O. Hill and his colleagues first observed a photoinduced grating in a germania-doped optical fiber … [F]iber Bragg gratings provide significant and important enhancements to fiber optic technology that enable one to integrate the filters, reflectors, tunable lasers, taps and sensing elements directly in the waveguiding core. As grating technology becomes more mature and fiber gratings become more available, we should begin to see them in commercial usage.”
