IPG Photonics Acquires Mobius UV Laser Capabilities

March 15, 2013—Fiber-laser company IPG Photonics Corporation (Oxford, Mass., U.S.A.) announced on March 13 the acquisition of privately held Mobius Photonics (Mountain View, Calif., U.S.A.), manufacturer of innovative pulsed fiber-laser sources. Mobius’ expertise in the ultraviolet (UV) range of fiber lasers enables IPG to enter the UV laser market and deepen its development team. Mobius will continue to provide customers with high-power pulsed fiber-based lasers for dicing and scribing of wafers, super-resolution microscopy, and scientific and industrial R&D. The details of the acquisition were not disclosed.

As part of the agreement, IPG acquired an exclusive license of U.S. Patent No. 5,745,284, which describes a tunable, solid-state UV laser originally issued to Harvard scientists in 1998, as well as other Mobius patents, licenses and trade secrets.

Mobius employees will remain at their facility, becoming part of the IPG Silicon Valley Technology Center group of IPG facilities in the Silicon Valley area.
