Photonics and Fiber Optics: Foundations and Applications

The editors and contributing authors have produced a very accessible book on photonics and fiber optics. Based on research conducted at leading Indian research institutes, this book is intended for senior undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in the field of photonics.

Beyond an introduction to light waves and fiber optic technology, this reference highlights different optical fibers. Readers primarily interested in photonics will find applications in high-voltage engineering, TiO2-nanowire-based optical sensors and simulations for electromagnetic band gap in 2D photonic crystals. In particular, the section on linear and nonlinear optical properties of layered nanomaterials of 2D hBN (hexagonal boron nitrite) nanosheets includes synthesis and characterization through Raman spectroscopy and XRD, TEM, AFM (atomic force microscope). Additionally, in laser applications, photodynamic therapy in medicine and new photo switchable dyads for light–energy conversion devices are discussed, as well as fluorescence fundamentals. The authors also provide an overview on optical fiber optics in communications and report on optical-fiber sensors for physical and chemical sensing.
