Bioinspired Photonics: Optical Structures and Systems Inspired by Nature

The idea for this book came from the research project “Bioinspired Photonics,” which was financed by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and led by the book’s author. The book is written for a multidisciplinary audience, including engineers, physicists, chemists, material scientists, biologists and zoologists, and is intended to be a scientific description of the wonders of the natural world for the technically inclined. Descriptions and discussions have minimal jargon and sufficient explanation to enable all readers to follow the text. Mathematics, pictures and figures are included when possible to illustrate the beauty and diversity of natural photonic systems.
