An OSA Europe research director shares insights from his foray into the world of public research funding in the EU.

OSA Europe research director Claus Roll recently authored four online OPN articles (www.osa-opn.org/german-funding) that detailed the European research-funding landscape at the country level. He focused on the EU’s largest economy, Germany—diving deeper into its major funding institutions, how national research funding works within the economy and what role optics and photonics play in that scheme. OPN spoke with Roll about some of the insights he gleaned from this process.
