In an online OSA Incubator Meeting, top industry and academic researchers explored the importance of accounting for aspects of the human visual system to take augmented and virtual reality to the next step.

The concepts of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have existed for many decades, but until recently, the public has experienced AR/VR mainly in science fiction. The first VR demonstration was in the late 1950s, when Morton Heilig unveiled an arcade machine called Sensoroma; the first AR “head-mounted display” was demonstrated in 1968 by Ivan Sutherland. Since then, many attempts for mass commercialization of these technologies have failed, mainly due to technical challenges.
