The coronavirus and its associated economic dislocations have complicated the technology’s 2020 rollout. But the changes wrought by the pandemic may boost the case for 5G in the long run.

Editor’s note: As 2020 dawned, it was widely billed as the year that 5G technology would go mainstream. Those forecasts, however, didn’t take into account the impacts that a tiny virus, around 125 nm in diameter, would have on the world economy and society. OPN asked the market research firm LightCounting for some thoughts on where the 5G rollout stands during this unusual year.
