“Manufacturing technologies have progressed to allow use of no-symmetry aspheric surfaces at low cost in high volume production—it remains for designers to explore this new “space” to learn to take full advantage of new capabilities. Holographic elements, diamond-machined surfaces, and gradient index optics [are] good examples of new technologies that expand the design possibilities.”
