Fiber communication unifies some of the most important optical discoveries of the last three centuries—from the contributions of Isaac Newton on light refraction and John Tyndall on infrared radiation to those of Charles Kao on fiber waveguides and Zhores Alferov on laser emitters—in a single platform. And in the three decades since the birth of fiber optic communication, the scale of information transfer capacity has transformed nearly every aspect of the global economy.
