Overcoming Limits for Nanophotonic Devices

Stewart Wills and Sarah Michaud

Q&A with Jung Park, Pablo Postigo, Volker Sorger and Fengnian Xia, hosts of OSA’s incubator meeting, “Nanophotonic Devices: Beyond Classical Limits.”

figureUniversal high-speed optoelectronics setup performs opto-electrical, electro-optical, opto-optical and electro-electrical measurements on a variety of devices.

On-chip integrated optoelectronic circuits like the silicon and III-V platforms have great potential for high-bandwidth applications. However, while photonic device performance is improving, light-matter interactions set fundamental limits on performance metrics like size, speed and drive power. Meeting attendees aimed to define ultimate device limitations and envision potential solutions to overcome them.
