Thomas Baer, executive director of the Stanford Photonics Research Center, U.S.A., and 2009 President of OSA, recently added chair of the U.S. National Photonics Initiative (NPI) advisory committee to his resume. NPI was formed following the release of the 2012 National Research Council report, “Optics and Photonics: Essential Technologies for our Nation,” which called for a U.S. initiative to increase photonics R&D, grow the U.S. economy and improve national security.
