Bolivia Jumps into the Light

Even with limited resources, Bolivia is making strides to advance its position in the world of optics and photonics.

In the heart of Latin America is Bolivia—a country with diverse cultures and terrains. It has also experienced many political ups and downs, including a revolution, a military junta and a succession of unstable governments followed by 30 years of democracy. These changes have contributed to sparse government funding in many areas, including science research and development. However, collaborative and private efforts have helped to advance applied optics and photonics technology in the country, albeit slowly.
