Underwater Imaging Gets Clearer

Underwater imaging in natural bodies of water is notoriously difficult due to the large range of particulates that can impede light propagation. However, recent developments in optical technology that build on polarization-based encryption and lidar are leading to incremental advances.

Beneath the waves, seeing is not necessarily believing. Lakes and oceans generally aren’t the crystal-clear waters one sees in travel brochures. A wide variety of stray particles and fluctuating densities conspire to obscure our best attempts of using undersea optical equipment to see beneath the surface.
