Boosting Precision and Stability of Optical Lattice Clocks

A Japanese team has learned how to improve the stability of an optical lattice clock by defeating one of the last remaining noise sources in the system.

Optical lattice clocks use a large number of atoms trapped in a laser interference pattern to provide a high level of timekeeping accuracy. A Japanese team has learned how to improve the stability of this type of clock by defeating one of the last remaining noise sources in the system.
