Electron Microscopes Get Twisty

Researchers at a U.S. laboratory have created spiraling “electron vortex beams” that could lead to better electron-microscopy images of magnetic and biological materials.

 

Scatterings imageNIST researchers twisted the flat electron wavefronts into a fan of helices using a very thin film with a 5-µm-diameter pattern of nanoscale slits.

Researchers at a U.S. laboratory have created spiraling “electron vortex beams” that could lead to better electron-microscopy images of magnetic and biological materials (Science 331, 192).
