Enthusiasts of the long-running game show Jeopardy! were wowed last month when Watson—a supercomputer developed by IBM at its T.J. Watson Research Center in New York—outsmarted two of the most decorated Jeopardy! contestants ever to play the game. While this particular application of a supercomputer was for entertainment purposes, Watson and other supercomputers offer a range of applications in medicine, astronomy and high-speed data communications.
