John Adolph Sanderson, OSA’s president in 1967, is remembered for his work on infrared radiation with the U.S. military, his dedication to improving optics education and his great contributions to the Society.

John Adolph Sanderson was born on 4 Nov. 1908 in Vardaman, Miss., U.S.A. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Mississippi in 1928 and his master’s in 1929. After spending two more years at Mississippi as an instructor in physics, Sanderson moved to Baltimore, where he completed his Ph.D. in optics at Johns Hopkins University in 1933.
