Floyd Karker Richtmyer was born October 12, 1881, in Cobleskill, N.Y., U.S.A. (30 miles west of Albany). He attended Cornell University, where he studied physics and optics under Edward L. Nicholls; he graduated in 1904. He taught for two years at Drexel University and then returned to join the staff at Cornell and complete a Ph.D. in 1910. He remained at Cornell until his death on November 7, 1939.
