Albert Polman obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1989 and was a post-doctoral researcher at AT&T Bell Laboratories until 1991. He became a group leader at the FOM-Institute for Atomic Molecular Physics (AMOLF) in Amsterdam in 1991. In 2005, he was appointed director of AMOLF.
