On July 19-21, 2007, the Optoelectronics Research Center (ORC) at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, hosted the first OSA International Network of Students (IONS) Conference.

IONS is a networking cooperative of OSA Student Chapters. The IONS meetings are focused on strengthening ties between student chapters and chapter members. The ORC’s OSA Student Chapter welcomed students from seven institutions. Attendees came from Turkey, Spain, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom.

The conference was sponsored by the ORC, OSA and Thorlabs. The ORC OSA Student Chapter arranged a program full of research seminars, exhibitions and social events. They also planned guest speakers from the photonics industry and the University’s related companies. Visiting students toured ORC’s state-of-the-art labs.

“The IONS Conference is a great way to meet other students from similar fields and it was a great honor to be able to hold it in Southampton and showcase the ORC’s research,” said Chris Holmes, Ph.D. stud-ent and OSA Student Chapter President. For more information, visit www.ions-project.org.
