Optics in 2013: Lensless Digital Holography

POSTED: 27 November 2013

In 2013, researchers at the National Institute of Optics in Florence, Italy, pioneered a new form of lens-free, infrared digital holography that can record holograms out of the focus plane and then numerically focus the image afterward. The technique may ultimately allow firefighters to “see through” fire to victims on the other side, as shown in this video. This work, along with 29 other breakthroughs in optics research over the past 12 months, is featured in Optics in 2013, in the December issue of Optics & Photonics News.
