GSI Group to Acquire Lincoln Laser in US$11 Million Deal

06 November 2015—The GSI Group in Bedford, Mass., USA, supplier of laser, precision motion and vision technologies to original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in medical and advanced industrial applications, announced this week an agreement to acquire ultrafast scanning equipment provider Lincoln Laser Company of Phoenix, Ariz., USA, for US$11 million in cash. Lincoln Laser’s business will integrate with the operations of Cambridge Technology, a GSI business group located in Bedford.

The capabilities of Lincoln Laser’s precision ultrafast, polygon-based scanner and laser-beam steering technology for laser printing, medical imaging, food processing and advanced industrial markets complements the existing galvanometer-based optical scanning technology of Cambridge Technology, which is directed toward the advanced industrial and medical markets. In addition to galvanometer scanners, Cambridge Technology also makes scanner components such as mirrors, scan heads and servo drivers, and integrated laser-beam-delivery systems.

John Roush, CEO at GSI, said, “The combination of Lincoln Laser Company with Cambridge Technology creates an expanded range of highly competitive beam-delivery technologies that significantly enhances our value proposition with OEM customers in growth applications.”

Cambridge Technology president Chris Tecca added, “The addition of Lincoln Laser Company’s technology and their extensive industry knowledge extends our capabilities to further penetrate attractive applications. We’re very excited that the Lincoln Laser Company management team will join us and continue to run its operations as this will provide continuity and enhance our engineering expertise.”

Both Cambridge Technology and Lincoln Laser have been designing, developing and manufacturing laser scanning equipment for more than 40 years. Lincoln Laser began as an endeavor to produce quality jigsaw puzzles using lasers.

The transaction is scheduled to close in November 2015, subject to customary working-capital adjustments. GSI Group generated revenue of US$92.3 million in the third quarter of 2015, a year-to-year increase of four percent.
