Automotive Industry Innovation Huge Opportunity for Photonics

20 March, 2015—Photonics in the global automotive industry will see explosive growth from €2.8 billion (US$3.02 billion) in 2014 to around €9 billion (US$9.71 billion) in 2020, a compound annual growth rate of approximately 22 percent from 2015 to 2020, according to a new report from analyst firm Tematys (Paris, France). The automotive segment, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), is increasing in popularity and its associated use of lasers, light sources like light-emitting diodes, lidar systems, cameras and heads-up displays. The report, Photonics Technologies for ADAS in the Automotive Industry; Needs, Challenges, Market Forecasts, is being released today.

The report finds that increasing demand for automated driver tasks is driving the growth of ADAS, such as cameras for parking assistance, lidar and laser systems for mapping of the environment around the car, cameras and sensors for active lane-maintaining systems, and night vision systems, among others. While the technology is installed initially in high-end luxury vehicles, ADAS systems are expected to reach many more vehicles in years to come.
