17 July, 2015—Technology contractor Harris Corporation (Melbourne, Fla., USA) has announced this week decisions on where its new segments will be based, after the acquisition of publicly owned Exelis (Rochester, N.Y., USA), manufacturer of precision optics and optical systems for aerospace, astronomy and microlithography systems.

Harris will maintain corporate headquarters in Melbourne, and will base its two new Electronic Systems and Space and Intelligence Systems segments in Palm Bay, Fla. The newly formed Communication Systems segment will be based in Rochester, where Harris operated for more than 55 years, and will combine the RF Communications segment of Harris and the Night Vision and Communications Solutions businesses of Exelis. The new Critical Networks segment combining elements of Harris and Exelis will be based in Herndon, Va., USA, where Harris has maintained a presence for more than 40 years. Harris has 6,000 employees in Florida and is the single top 10 defense contractor with its headquarters in the state.

The US$4.6 billion acquisition, completed 29 May, was “transformative” to the contractor.
