University of Southampton to Launch New Zepler Institute for Photonics

Valerie C. Coffey

September 6, 2013—The University of Southampton in England has announced the upcoming launch of the Zepler Institute, the largest photonics and electronics institute in the UK on 12 September. The Zepler Institute, named for Eric Ernest Zepler, the founder of department of electronics and computer science at Southampton in 1947, is a collaborative research center combining the disciplines of photonics, advanced materials, quantum technologies and nanoscience.

The Institute will provide a multidisciplinary research environment founded on the University’s past contributions to photonics and electronics technology, which figure largely in today’s communications infrastructure. Sir David Payne, director of Southampton’s Optoelectronics Research Centre and inventor of the erbium-doped fiber amplifier, will lead the Institute.

Research conducted at the Zepler Institute will focus on future global technology challenges, such as ultra-high bandwidth communications, biophotonics for point-of-care diagnostics, and quantum devices and technologies.
