There have been several textbooks written about the principles of fiber optic communications since its development several decades ago. One may question the need for another textbook on this topic, but the technology continues to evolve at both the device and system levels. The distinctive contribution of this book is that it incorporates recent developments, specifically channel multiplexing techniques where attention is given to orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). Nonlinear effects in fibers and digital signal processing are also discussed. The book is structured for both undergraduate and graduate students, so it’s probably not intended to be taught in a single course. The detailed, worked examples and first-principles derivations of key results are helpful pedagogical features. Students seeking their first exposure to this field who also wish to learn about advanced topics will find their requirements met by this book.
