Coherent Doppler Wind Lidars in a Turbulent Atmosphere

This fine book covers coherent Doppler laser (CDL) systems and summarizes the last 20 years of research from the Institute of Atmospheric Optics of the former USSR Academy of Science, Siberian Branch. The introductory chapter is on the statistical properties of received CDL signals, either CW or pulsed. The next section develops the estimates of radial velocity and Doppler spectrum width, and three additional chapters are devoted to applications. These include wind velocity and direction from CDL data, the estimation of atmospheric turbulence from CDL measurements (a subject difficult to find in similar books) and the lidar-signal study of aircraft wake vortices. This polished volume is unique in its coverage of atmospheric turbulence.
