A colleague once said that it can take just 11 years for the scientific community to forget a published achievement—perhaps because the work was ahead of its time, was viewed skeptically, or was otherwise misunderstood. In the pre-Internet era, it might have been tucked away in the annals of a university library, only to be rediscovered as a “first” years later.
