The Ottoman civilization left behind a rich architectural heritage in the Middle East. The great architect Sinan (d. 1588) was responsible for several hundred structures spread over the Turkish Empire, and the great mosques—including Süleymaniye in Istanbul and Selimeye in Edirne—are considered his masterpieces.
