Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a relatively new technology, but is it having a significant impact in biomedical research. It was first demonstrated just 20 years ago, and it has already emerged as a powerful imaging tool in the biomedical world. In fact, OCT has become so widespread in the medical field that a journal keyword search on "optical coherence tomography" retrieves more than 10,000 references. The commercial market is estimated at several hundred million dollars.
