The Art of Seeing: Educating Kids with Partial Vision

Danuta Bukowska and Ewa Kwiatkowska

Educating young children with partial vision presents a special set of challenges. The Nicolaus Copernicus University OSA student chapter in Poland rose to the occasion by developing a national contest to design optical toys geared toward kids with significant visual impairment.

Studies suggest that most of what children learn during the early years of life is processed through their vision. Children who have partial sight—defined as not being able to see facial expressions or read standard newsprint even with the aid of corrective lenses—may not learn as quickly as those with full vision because they cannot easily absorb information by watching and copying others.
