Photonic Crystal Structures in Molecular Biosensing

Biosensing now spans a range of medical, environmental and industrial applications. New optical techniques based on scattering, absorbance, transmission and photonic crystal technology will allow for compact, low-cost and reliable automatic analysis that can be easily produced on a mass scale.

Biosensing allows for the detection of biological and chemical agents within our bodies, the environment and industry. For example, it can be used to detect and measure the presence of small molecules, including gases, in the air; large biomarkers for disease in our bodies and pesticides in our environment; or microorganisms and viruses such as bacteria or spores, which may be detected for medical or national defense purposes. There is also a particularly strong demand for devices that can be used in a medical context to provide rapid and reliable point-of-care diagnosis for various types of cancer, a wide range of pathogenic diseases, HIV and stroke.
