Zygo Corp. began with the recognition of an unmet need. In the late 1960s, when I was a Princeton postdoc working with Prof. Henry Hill at Wesleyan University, we found ourselves frustrated that no companies could reliably produce high-precision non-circular plano optics with very low scatter and low surface defects—nor had they the metrology capability to verify quality. Of course, we realized this just when we needed such an optic for a research project.
