On Sept. 24-27, the first North-American-based International OSA Network of Students (IONS) meeting was held at the University of Maryland, College Park, Md., U.S.A. IONS is an organization for international students in optics and photonics. The conference, organized by the University of Maryland SPIE/OSA student chapters, was attended by more than 80 participants from 15 countries and 10 U.S. states. Plenary speakers were 1997 Nobel laureate William D. Phillips as well as 2009 OSA President Thomas M. Baer.
