Photonic Crystal LEDs

LEDs that have photonic crystals etched on them can direct the emission of light at preferred angles and enhance brightness without consuming more power. These devices have the potential to revolutionize the lighting industry—and spur widespread adoption of environmentally friendly lighting solutions.

figurePhotonic crystal LEDs have broad applications in residential lighting, consumer devices, architectural design, retail lighting and street illumination.

Semiconductor light emitters have evolved rapidly over the past few years. We are now on the threshold of an era in which most ambient lighting will be provided by solid-state devices. Many academic, government and industrial labs around the world are contributing to continued advances in the technology of light-emitting diodes (LEDs)—the engines of solid-state lighting.
