There is no such thing as an international patent. So how can intellectual property managers ensure that their inventions are protected in an increasingly global world?

For American entrepreneurs, companies or academic institutions looking to protect their intellectual property, a patent is usually a good place to start. However, a U.S. patent will only provide protection outside of the United States if the patent relates to a tangible product that is being imported into the country; it provides no legal recourse to the patent holder should an overseas company decide to sell an item or provide a service outside the United States.
