Microscopic particles self-assemble to provide 2D crystal patterns.

Two-dimensional colloidal crystals would be useful as templates on which to grow 3D photonic crystals, as masks for creating surface-plasmonic structures, or as molds for microlens arrays. Researchers have developed methods for depositing close-packed structures, but flexible, efficient techniques for building more arbitrary arrays are still lacking.
