Shining Light on Seasonal Depression

After a quarter-century of study on light therapy for seasonal depression, scientists are homing in on the reasons why bright light makes us happier.

Since ancient times, humans have sensed instinctively that light and mood are related. We speak of a “sunny disposition” or “gloomy weather.” We may smile at sun-dappled scenes in Impressionist paintings and frown at the foreboding gray clouds in other artwork.
