Global Undersea Cable Network

Both the planning and the construction of optical telecommunications networks are now being conducted global scale. Phase one of the TyCom Global Network (TGN) will use 250,000 km of cable (and over 2,000,000 km of op- tical fiber) to connect the majority of the earth’s population centers with primary ca- ble landings in the
Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean oceans (see Fig. 1). The transmission capacity of these next-genera- tion links will far exceed 1 Tbit/s, a level once considered exclusively the realm of laboratory experiments.
