Call for Submissions:
After Image Photo Contest
The staff of Optics & Photonics News would like to invite you to participate in our 3rd annual After Image photography contest. We received 37 stunning submissions in the 2007 competition and are hoping for even more great shots this year.
As our devoted readers know, the After Image column appears regularly on our back page and consists of a large, full-page image that demonstrates some aspect of optics, or an image that was created using optical equipment. What constitutes a great After Image? Consider the following: the use of microscopy to create a compelling image whose subject is not immediately recognizable, or one that looks like something other than what it is; the use of crystallography to reveal a striking tapestry of color and geometric patterns; a satellite image that captures an alien landscape, or a sweeping new view of one on Earth; a telescopic image of distant stars, galaxies, nebulae or other celestial bodies; any use of optical equipment such as lasers, mirrors or fibers to create an abstract or artistic image; a picture that captures atmospheric optics or optics in the natural world—for example, a rainbow, an aurora, the reflection off of a lake.
Rules and deadlines: Please submit images by August 1, 2008. Like last year, we will enlist the help of our editorial advisory committee of optical physicists to judge the entries, and we plan to announce the winner and runners-up in a late-2008 issue of OPN.
In order to be considered for the contest, entrants must own the copyright of the image they submit. Images should be submitted as JPG (or RAW) files for the best possible output. TIF files are also accepted. Images should be 8.5” x 11” as well as 300 dpi or greater. Images not meeting these requirements may be disqualified. Multiple entries are permitted.
